Bodum 11451-01US 17-Ounce Electric Water Kettle, Black

Bodum water kettles
Like many people, we became enamoured with electric kettles from visiting the UK, and so bought a Bodum Mini Ibis model (just like the hotel version), but after a few years of calcification from tap water, decided to purchase a replacement in the Bodum Bistro model.

The advantage of the Mini Ibis model is the manual switch -- you can turn it off/on at will, but the disadvantage is the exposed heating coil, which collects mineral deposits all along its odd shape if you use tap water. Some may find attaching/removing the lid a bit awkward, but at the time we bought ours, the price was less than $25. No longer.

The Bodum Bistro has a concealed heating element, which is somewhat easier to keep clean -- but we recommend distilled water in any event. The Bistro does, however, have an automatic off switch that is thermo-controlled, as a safety feature, but which also means you cannot manually stop the boiling. The lid is hinged in place, and the entire unit displays a...

Best electric kettle for a single cup
I received this slightly redesigned model as a warranty replacement for the 2011 model, which had a push-button switch that couldn't be manually shut off, and which failed after 18 months. The warranty is 24 months, Bodum was very nice about replacing the broken kettle, and I hope this is a mature design with a more robust heat-sensing switch than the previous model.
If it is, it's the perfect kettle for those of us who only need one (large, 16oz) cup at a time. It has a very nice pour spout, good enough for the trendy (and practical!) "manual pour-over" coffee brewing technique. Paired with a $2 Ready-Set-Joe filter holder and a pack of filters, you have a top-quality coffee maker for under $50. Bonmac and Hario have $10 versions of the filter holders if you prefer.
The only thing you don't get is exact temperature control, but I find pouring 1-2oz cold water in after the boil gets me the perfect 195 F water I need for a pour-over. The other kettles also either don't...

Great small kettle
I was looking for a small electric kettle that shuts itself off to bring with me on a cruise ship. This one worked great and took up little space in my luggage.
